Bay United players, the coaching team, management, the club’s supporters and sponsors should hold their heads high for doing “the best they could” to put Eastern Cape soccer on the map –- notwithstanding the senior team’s failure to secure a place in promotional play-offs.
The province’s only professional soccer team’s dream of promotion to the elite Premier League came to an abrupt end last Saturday. This after the Port Elizabeth-based National First Division outfit was held to a 2-2 draw by KwaZulu-Natal’s Thanda Royal Zulu. Bay United needed an outright win to be able to qualify for play-offs.
Speaking for the first time since Saturday’s game, which was the team’s last for match the season, Bay United chairman Sipho Pityana said: “Understandably, every member of the Bay United family is disappointed. All of us would have wanted to see our team reach the play-off stage, but it was not to be.”
“It was a struggle worth pursuing,” Pityana said, “for the sake of the soccer-loving people in our city and our province”.
Pityana said he will convene a special Bay United board meeting within three weeks to discuss the club’s future plans.
